Olight Odin review:
Olight just released an amazing new product – the Odin. What is it? Well basically, it is remarkably similar to the M2R Warrior Pro when it comes to output, size and operation, but with one tiny yet important detail, that being it is made specifically to fit onto your favorite rifle. The Odin comes with a small protrusion on the side that easily slides into the special mount that fits onto any picatinny rail.
After a barrage of diverse and successful pistol lights, ranging from the small PL-1 Mini all the was to the PL-Pro and Baldr-pro, all of which fulfill all the needs one might have when it comes to pistol mounted lights and lasers, Olight finally delivered the next step, a rifle dedicated flashlight, and it really is something special.
Let us get the technical details out of the way and then quickly hop on to the important part. Odin weighs 216 grams together with the dedicated 21700 battery. This fat boy comes at 5000mAh and ensures about two hours of operation at high intensity of 760 lumens, including 2 minutes at 2000 lumens and 9 minutes of 1000 lumens, giving you daylight for better part of the night.
The flashlight is 136mm long, 29mm thick (at the head, and 26.6mm at the body), making it a standard size flashlight to use on a rifle, as well as a perfect handheld light should one decide to use it that way.
It is both drop proof and water resistant (IPX8), which is quite expected from a tactical light, and extremely rugged, which has become a standard with Olight. This light will last for a long, long time, even with serious use and abuse.
As described above, it has a maximum output of 2000 lumens, and a beam throw of an impressive 300 meters. There are four levels of output (300/760/1000/2000 lumens) that will give a total run time of about two and a half hours. The light is operated with the magnetic tail-switch, which also serves as the charging dock (the magnetic charger is, of course, included), as well as the remote-switch attachment point. And that is what gets us into the good stuff.
The light comes in a box, and that box is full of goodies that make this all so very special. Besides the charger, what comes with the flashlight is also a remote switch. The switch latches to the back of the flashlight by a magnet and a locking ring, making plugging and un-plugging simple and fast, with no need to screw and unscrew stuff. The locking ring will make sure that the magnet is not simply pulled off during manipulation of the rifle. And the good stuff – even the remote switch already comes with the picatinny mounting rubber.
The second thing that makes this so interesting and shows all the ingenuity Olight keeps bringing to the table is the mounting system. The light has a small protrusion on the side (not big enough to bother you when using it as a handheld though), which is compatible with the mount that is included in the package. The mount can be attached to any picatinny rail and has two ports for locking the flashlight. The protrusion on the light slides into any of these two ports, which are at a 90-degree angle in relation to each other, while a small twist-know locks the light in place. This gives you great options how to run the light on the gun and makes mounting and removing the light easy and fast. This, combined with the magnet attachable remote switch, gives the flashlight great flexibility and ease of operation. The whole system can be installed and removed in mere seconds!
You have, therefore, a reasonably priced system, that comes ready to use with all imaginable accessories from the box. Innovative, powerful and rugged, easy and fast to use, really, what more would you want from a tactical flashlight?
